the umbrellas of cherbourg

other night, we watched jacques demy's the umbrellas of cherbourg, a '64 french flick in which _every word of dialogue_ is sung to a score by michel legrand. it's a lot more clear-eyed a view of romance than any 'meercun film would ever have shown, and my sweetie points out that baz luhrmann's overhyped moulin rouge owes everything to demy's example.

heeyyy, that reminds me. i have the "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" soundtrack on vinyl (!) around here somewhere. might be the perfect thing to listen to on this rain-sodden day.

one of those tunes (i guess the title track - dunno?) is my ma and pop's weddin' song. years later - they ended up picking another tune in addition after realizing they never, ever heard their original selection played anywhere...
