television

just penned a review of a book about television for the i-94 bar. (thanks, bungy!) here's a two-part vid of an early rehearsal featuring tom verlaine vs. richard hell.

here they are again, with fred smith replacing hell on bass, on brit tv from 1978, playing "foxhole" from adventure.

and here they are on father's day this year, playing "marquee moon" in nyc's central park with jimmy rip replacing richard lloyd on second gtr, in what appears to be their last hurrah. sounds like i gotta listen to them chords again.

I would point out two things about the Richard Hell rehearsal: 1) that's Lloyd behaving like an ass whining (not Hell) and Verlaine behaving not much better in his uptight, anal way, and 2) Richard Hell doesn't sound so bad. As Hell has said, he didn't start that band with Verlaine in order to be a bass player, anyway, but rather a songwriter and singer. Also he'd been playing bass about six months when this tape was made, whereas Verlaine had been playing guitar for six years. Under the circumstances, Hell is being more patient with the insufferably priggish Verlaine than Verlaine is being with Hell.
